Must See Mexico

Cancun, Mexico is much more than spring break party spots and college vacation hangouts. Beyond beautiful beaches and serene sunrises, Mexico houses a world treasure that is well worth the trip.  Designated as one of the Seven Wonders of the World and recognized as the second most popular archaeological site in Mexico, the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are a must see.  Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan Peninsula and easily accessible from the popular tourist city of Cancun.  Take a guided tour or explore the marvelous works on your own.  Observe how the light and shadows cast an image of the feathered serpent god on the main temple “Kukulcan”,  said to be particularly visible during the spring equinox.  Wander through the ruins and visit some of the other less famous structures created by the ancient Mayans.  From entrance to exit; prepare to be overwhelmed by local artists, elderly and children alike, peddling their crafts and trinkets.  Purchase a few authentic souvenirs, but don’t get suckered!

If you’re not ready to go back to the traditional tourist vacation at your cozy resort, visit one of the popular cenotes in the area.  Cenotes, natural sinkholes were once used as water sources for ancient civilizations and sometimes as sacrificial sites.  Today, sinkholes in Mexico are sources of tourist entertainment.  If you’re brave, go cliff diving into a 130 ft deep cenote or take a relaxing dip in the tranquil waters.  Mexico is known for these naturally formed swimming holes and many are open for public enjoyment.

On your trip, think outside the box.  From sampling traditional Mexican cuisine to waterparks located on the Mayan Riviera like Xel-ha and Xcaret to exploring ancient sites including Chichen Itza as well as Tulum and Coba, Mexico offers lots of fun an excitement to keep you busy from beginning to end!
